Not all companies have their Corporate Social Responsibility areas and their foundation working together. In some corporations each area literally goes its own way. Its excessively prudent directors prefer “not to mix matters” and delegate “the nice part of the job” to the foundation, which consists of giving donations. One area ends up doing its job without highlighting the other and the first impression that some members of the board of directors have is that there is double spending. Is it advisable or not to do it? That is, to each their own? Those who frequently follow us as readers of this space know the answer: Yes, because both are business units that contribute to working on community engagement indicators. In the case of GlaxoSmithKline, a union of efforts occurs that makes it easier to carry out actions in favor of the company, the foundation and the community. Their experience allows us to see the competitive advantages over other pharmaceutical laboratories. Its foundation was established in 1989 and its mission statement contains the purpose of GSK as a company: to contribute to improving the quality of human life. Both instances are perfectly aligned because the foundation works for this purpose. To achieve its objective, the GSK Foundation develops two major initiatives that resemble the experience of many North American business foundations: it supports research, in this case medical, and sponsors, together with the Mexican Foundation for Health, the National Research Award (biomedical).

In the US, a countless number of business Phone Number List foundations play a prominent role in discreetly supporting activities in various sectors that traditionally in other countries do not receive as much public and private financing because they belong to areas of interest that are “apparently” modest or of little importance, such as direct scientific research. We say “appearance” because many business resources are allocated, via their foundations, to stimulating creativity and industrial innovation, development of computing and robotics. They also dedicate resources to solve the needs faced by the industrial production plant from universities, institutes and technology to benefit their large companies. Financing translates into social investment of resources that directly supports the work of scientists and researchers. In this way, projects of institutes, technology companies and universities are financed, which benefit them with additional income to the salary that their scientists and researchers receive, making it easier for them to be at the forefront of science and technology. In this way, the main beneficiary is the company itself for the knowledge generated that becomes practical applications to make productive processes more efficient, revolutionize others, increase productivity and innovate. The scientific community receives honorable salaries and recognition for their work, while the fruit of their work is translated into goods to improve social well-being.

If the list of Nobel Prize winners is reviewed, many of these North American laureates in their professional careers benefited, directly or indirectly, from company-foundation-community support programs that could be research projects or postgraduate study scholarships. In this way, the link between the company, the university and research centers turns out to be a virtuous circle that unites the company with its knowledge, study and research centers in a value chain. The GSK Foundation in Mexico contributes significantly by sponsoring the National Research Award, which recognizes the following categories: basic biomedical research, clinical biomedical research, epidemiological biomedical research, and dental research. But it is necessary to highlight that a large part of the value of this institution's intervention is that it assumes a long-term commitment, which is not common in this type of foundations, nor in the country. The GSK Foundation provides solutions to problems in the health-disease process and the company generates the medicines necessary to fulfill its business mission. For its part, the GSK company recently implemented the Value Chain: Ethics and Transparency program, with which each supplier in its commercial and business relationship will improve its practices and performance.
